There is more to college than hitting the books. There are a variety of options available to you to get involved and have fun. Clubs From the Bowling Club to the Underwater Basket Weaving Association, chances are you can find a club or organization that fits your interests and talents. Joining a club is a great way to meet new friends, get involved on campus and explore new interests. You can find a complete list of clubs and organizations on your university's web site, or in your welcome packet as well as information on how to join. Student Government Do you imagine yourself running the country? Well, before you climb into Air Force One, you might want to check out the student government and leadership opportunities offered at your school. By participating in student government, you can be instrumental in forming student policy on campus, learn about election and government processes, as well as develop essential leadership skills. Volunteer Opportunities Giving back to your community is always a rewarding experience. You will find many volunteer opportunities sponsored by your university. Also check the newspaper for local organizations that are in need of volunteers such as the animal shelter, hospitals or food kitchens. But if you are still not sure where to begin, ask around. Your roommate, professor, advisor or resident assistant may have some helpful suggestions. Greek Life Ready to go Greek? If you envision scenes from the movie Animal House, think again. Fraternities and sororities are organizations designed to promote scholarship and leadership, stimulate social interaction, and offer opportunities for development of strong long-lasting friendships. Night Life The college experience wouldn’t be complete without some extracurricular nocturnal activity. That’s right, night life. In almost every college town you will find dance clubs, coffee houses, outdoor concerts and much more to satisfy any interest and budget. Sports and Recreation Okay, you’re five-foot-two and your free-throw percentage is running in the negative numbers. Yet you love playing the game. Just because you won’t be playing a sport for your college doesn’t mean that you have to give it up. Intramural sports are a great way to stay in shape, meet people with the same love of the game and participate in some friendly competition for bragging rights. Most colleges offer sports clubs, or you can join your dorm’s intramural team. If those options aren’t available, you can also join a team at the local community center. |
